Los estudios sobre tabaquismo en muchos países han demostrado que ésta droga  la principal causa de muerte por cáncer, estos mismos estudios señalan que los grandes fumadores sufren cuatro veces mas de cáncer que los no fumadores o quienes han dejado de fumar:  De los cánceres que produce el tabaco es bueno recordar que el de pulmón es el mas frecuente, en ambos sexos, pero el tabaco está implicado o relacionado con la aparición de cáncer en otros sitios del cuerpo como la cavidad bucal incluyendo la lengua, los labios y las glándulas salivares, la laringe, el esófago, el estomago, la vejiga, el riñón, el páncreas, el cuello del útero y de la sangre como la leucemia.

El tabaco contiene 50 sustancias cancerígenas que al ponerse en contacto con las células del organismo las irritan y las transforman en células cancerígenas, pero este proceso de transformación no se presenta de la noche a la mañana, sino que se da de manera lenta y acumulativa, es decir, que se demora varios años y cada que fumamos se va aumentando el proceso hasta que finalmente se desarrolla el tumor cancerígeno.

Se sabe que mientras menor sea la edad de inicio del consumo de cigarrillo, mayor riesgo de cáncer existe, se sabe que los fumadores de más de 20 cigarrillos al día tienen el doble de posibilidades de desarrollar los tumores y que los fumadores de más de 40 cigarrillos al día tienen el cuádruplo de posibilidades de desarrollar el cáncer. Igualmente se conoce que el suspender el consumo de cigarrillo, disminuye los riesgos de los canceres y que después de 15 años de abstinencia, los riesgos son casi iguales a los de la población que nunca a fumado, este hecho nos muestra cómo se hace necesario que los fumadores actuales abandonen el consumo lo más pronto posible, ya que mientras mas ligero inicien la desintoxicación del organismo y mientras mas temprano liberemos a los pulmones del humo del cigarrillo, empezaremos a tener menos riesgos de desarrollar estos canceres.

Por otro lado es muy importante señalar que los estudios sobre cánceres producidos por el tabaco, principalmente en los pulmones, cavidad bucal, laringe, esófago, estomago y el cuello uterino demuestran que el consumo de cigarrillo con el alcohol aumenta el riesgo y la rapidez con que se desarrollan estos tumores, es decir, que el efecto del alcohol y el tabaco se potencializa en su acción dañina sobre el organismo.

Todo lo anterior es necesario mantenerlo muy presente y nos exige una gran responsabilidad ya que la mayoría de los fumadores adquirieron el habito de fumar por haber visto fumar a los padres o figuras importantes, de ahí que si dejamos de fumar protegemos nuestra salud y la de neutros hijos, que no aprenderán de nosotros el habito de fumar y que además comprenderán que se debe dejar de fumar como símbolo de responsabilidad y madurez.
