El consumo de alcohol se relaciona muy comúnmente con cuadros de ataques epilépticos, estudios a nivel mundial establecen esta relación entre el 5 al 35%, es decir que de cada 100 alcohólicos de 5 a 35 de ellos pueden presentar a lo largo de su vida ataques de epilepsia.

¿Cuáles son las causas de estos ataques?. Son fundamentalmente cuatro a saber:

En primer lugar esta el cuadro de Delirium Tremens, que se presenta cuando el Alcohólico abandona la ingesta o disminuye el consumo, este síndrome se puede iniciar con la aparición de crisis convulsivas hasta en el 50% de los alcohólicos que lo presentan, las convulsiones que presentan pueden ser muy repetitivas y de larga duración produciendo un gran daño cerebral e incluso la muerte.

En segundo lugar las crisis convulsivas se pueden disparar por el consumo de alcohol en un paciente epiléptico, es decir, que cuando una persona sufre con anterioridad de epilepsia, el consumo de alcohol en ella le agrava su enfermedad, produciéndole mayor daño cerebral y haciendo más difícil el tratamiento.  En los epilépticos esta absolutamente contraindicado (prohibido) el consumo de alcohol.

En tercer lugar es muy común que en los Alcohólicos sufran traumas craneanos repetitivos, presentando daños en el tejido cerebral los cuales pueden convertirse en focos epilépticos apareciendo en estos pacientes epilepsias tardías de muy difícil manejo ya que responden muy poco a los tratamientos.

En cuarto lugar puede suceder que la persona tenga una predisposición a sufrir  de epilepsia la cual no se había aun declarado y el consumo de alcohol permita que esta se dispare, por ello si en nuestra familia existen personas que sufran de epilepsia debemos de cuidarnos ya que es posible que nosotros seamos mas propensos que otros a sufrir también de epilepsia y con el consumo del alcohol se nos declare esta enfermedad.

Todo lo anterior nos muestra que el alcohol puede causar en la vida de las personas graves problemas de salud al asociarse con los cuadros epilépticos en un porcentaje tan alto como el 35%, la epilepsia por si misma causa en las personas algunas limitaciones e incapacidades y si a estas se le agregan los daños que el alcohol produce directamente sobre el cerebro la situaron se vuelve muy critica y de difícil manejo y tratamiento.
